If you want a night at the theatre that leaves you smiling and feeling just that little bit better about life, head to the Garrick Theatre for From the Heart. Legendary lyricist Don Black proves that great songs never go out of fashion, serving up an affectionate, funny and deeply moving celebration of a lifetime spent putting words to music.
This is no dusty trip down memory lane. It is a lively, entertaining love letter to songwriting, packed with personality, musical memories and the kind of stories that go straight to the heart – a tribute to the intimate world of cabaret.

There is something wonderfully romantic about the New York cabaret scene: intimate clubs, low lights, a piano, a singer and an audience hanging on every word. These are places where songs become stories, where laughter can turn to tears in a heartbeat, and where a performer can make an entire room feel as though they are sharing a secret.
Black understands the irresistible appeal of the great cabaret story song — those miniature dramas that capture love, heartbreak, ambition, disappointment and life’s delicious absurdities in just a few minutes. These songs are not simply about hitting the right notes. They are about creating characters, revealing secrets and telling stories that make us recognise something of ourselves. One minute you are laughing at a wonderfully observed situation; the next, you are feeling a lump in your throat.

It is classic New York cabaret magic, delivered with a distinctly West End sparkle. The five performers bring a terrific range of personalities and vocal talents to Black’s material and are a sensational cast that really delivers.
Frances Mayli McCann brings warmth and emotional honesty, giving the more tender songs a genuine sense of intimacy. Shona McGarty adds infectious energy, natural charm and an engaging stage presence, making the lighter, character-driven material particularly enjoyable and Caroline O’Connor is a theatrical powerhouse, combining commanding presence, fabulous comic timing and the ability to make a number sparkle.

Clive Rowe is an absolute treasure, bringing humanity, warmth and a wonderfully grounded sense of character. He understands that the secret of a great story song lies in the life behind the lyrics and Michael D. Xavier contributes polish, charm and vocal sophistication, delivering his material with impressive assurance and emotional colour.
Together, they make a cracking ensemble, moving effortlessly between comedy, romance and heartfelt reflection. There is real variety here, and the performers understand that cabaret is about personality and storytelling just as much as vocal fireworks.

From the comic pleasures of “Fizzy or Still”, “Doctors” and “Me Too” through the heart-wrenching ballads “Everything But The Blame” and “How Do You Fall Out of Love” to the showbiz observations of “The Reluctant Star”, Black’s writing demonstrates its remarkable versatility. His lyrics can be cheeky, poignant, sharply observant or unexpectedly moving. With Black himself helping to introduce the songs and share the stories behind them, the show becomes a personal journey through his creative world.
Musical director Joe Church and arranger and musical supervisor Nick Barstow provide a stylish musical framework, while director Nick Winston keeps the evening flowing with energy and warmth.

The finale celebration of Black’s best-known work is another highlight, with familiar favourites including “Born Free”, “Love Changes Everything”, “To Sir With Love” and “Diamonds Are Forever” reminding us just how deeply his songs have entered popular culture. A special guest performer at each performance adds an extra touch of anticipation.
From the Heart is a joyful reminder of why we love live performance. It entertains, surprises and moves us, celebrating the extraordinary power of a song to capture a moment, a memory or an entire life. Warm-hearted and wonderfully entertaining, From the Heart is a must for cabaret lovers and musical theatre fans alike. A little New York magic, a lot of West End class and a whole lot of heart!
A fabulous celebration of song, storytelling and the magic of New York cabaret!
