With Drew Baxter

On the first Wednesday of each month Drew presents his eclectic choice of music and memories from across the years, from stage and screen. All the classic musicals you’d expect, plus a few surprises.

Drew probes every corner of the Box Office Radio music library to make sure you’ll hear everything from Ivor Novello to Stephen Sondheim.

Highlighting the greatest stars from the golden age of Hollywood, Broadway and beyond, there’s something for everyone in The Classic Collection.

COLE PORTER SPECIAL
(If music is already playing please click PAUSE on the top left of the page)

Cole Porter was, in my opinion, a master of his art. He is supposed to have joked about Rodgers and Hammerstein, “two men, to write a song!”. He did it all: the words and the music, and many of the songs he wrote became standards. Across more than 40 years he gave us classic scores for both stage and screen, and even in 2024, his work is still popular, hence the recent revival of Kiss Me Kate currently running at The Barbican (discount tickets for Kiss Me Kate are available here). With the anniversary of his birth, 9th June, being so close to the broadcast of my June Collection, it felt only right to celebrate the man and his music.

We begin with Anything Goes and we travel via Born To Dance to Silk Stockings. We embrace Fifty Million Frenchmen and enjoy High Society. Ridin’ High, we salute The New Yorkers and we hear what Miss Otis Regrets. My hope is you won’t regret listening to my tribute to Cole Porter, featuring the voices of Doris Day, Peggy Lee, Lena Horne, Ethel Merman and Elisabeth Welch, to name just a few. I hope you enjoy it. Thanks for listening.
